About the Bands

The Austin High School Band Program has long been committed to excellence through musical performance. They have received 40 consecutive Superior ratings at the Alabama Bandmasters Association State Band Festival, the longest string of consecutive superiors in the state.

The band has performed for the Alabama Music Educators Association and the National Band Association, and competed throughout the United States. In the spring of 2002, the Symphonic Band was invited and accepted an invitation to perform for the College Band Directors National Association/National Band Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. That same year they performed at the Bands of American National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Austin High School Band Program includes three concert bands, a 220 member marching band, a jazz band, and at times a percussion ensemble, a clarinet quartet, and both woodwind and brass quintets. The band soon hopes to add a clarinet choir, a Woodwind Quintet, and a Brass Quintet to its performing ensembles.

Students from the band participate in a variety of other community musical events, such as playing in various church and civic orchestras. We take pride in developing the individual musician as well. Austin High School students are regularly selected to participate in the Alabama All-State Bands, the Alabama All-State Jazz Band, and in numerous college and university honor bands. The 220 member band each year earns well over twice that number of Superior ratings at the Solo and Ensemble Festival.

After leaving Austin High School, many students continue to play in college and beyond. Austin students have received music scholarships to Calhoun Community College, University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of North Alabama, Tennessee Technical University, Samford University, University of Mississippi, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Alabama-Huntsville, Louisiana State University, Florida State University, and Juliard. Many of these students graduate with degrees in music and many are professional educators around the state.

Many factors contribute to the success of the Austin High School Band. The enthusiasm and hard work of the students, the dedication and support of parents, and an outstanding administration are only a few. The band takes great pride in achieving and maintaining the high standards which are required of an exemplary band program.
